Do I need a referral to see a Sports Medicine Doctor or Orthopaedic Surgeon?

YES, a referral is required to see a Sports Medicine Doctor or an Orthopaedic Surgeon. Your family doctor or another healthcare provider can send a referral to our clinic, and we will handle the rest.

 

When should I make an appointment to come to Orthopaedic Institute?

You should schedule an appointment when:

  • You’ve sustained an injury
  • You’re in need of maintenance care
  • You’re recovering post-surgery
  • You want to optimize your function or prevent future injuries
  • If you’re unsure about the timing or type of care you need, our team is happy to assist you in determining the best course of action.

What happens if I miss an appointment?

We understand life happens! However, we kindly ask that you notify us at least 24 hours before your appointment if you cannot attend. We send multiple appointment reminders to avoid missed appointments. A missed appointment fee will be charged unless there are extraordinary circumstances that prevent you from attending. We can also assist in rescheduling if needed.

 

Does OHIP cover the cost of my appointment?

YES, OHIP covers specialist appointments with a Sports Medicine Doctor or Orthopaedic Surgeon.

NO, OHIP does not cover physiotherapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy, or other non-specialist services. However, many extended insurance plans cover these services.

How much do injections cost?

Viscosupplementation & PRP Injections range from $600 to $650, depending on the treatment plan and specific needs. Our team will explain pricing during your consultation, so you know exactly what to expect.

How do I decide which healthcare practitioner to see?

Choosing the right practitioner depends on your condition and personal preferences. Our team can provide recommendations based on your injury or treatment needs. Each healthcare practitioner, whether it’s a physiotherapist, chiropractor, or massage therapist, specializes in different areas, and we can ensure that you’re matched with the expert that’s right for you.

 

How long will my appointment take?

Specialist appointments The length varies based on the type of consultation and treatment. We’ll inform you of the expected duration when you book your appointment

Physiotherapy and Chiropractic

Initial assessments are 45-60 minutes

Follow-up appointments are typically 30-45 minutes

Our goal is to make sure you have enough time to discuss your concerns and get the treatment you need.

 

Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist, Chiropractic, massage therapist, or pedorthist?

NO, you do not need a referral for physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage therapy or pedorthics. You can book directly with any of these practitioners whenever you feel ready for treatment.

Please note that while a referral is not required to receive care, some extended health insurance providers may require a physician’s referral in order to reimburse your claim. We recommend checking your specific plan details to ensure you have the proper documentation for coverage.

 

What clinic policies should I be aware of?

If you cannot attend your appointment due to illness or another emergency, please notify our clinic at least 24 hours before your scheduled appointment.

We apply a non-refundable charge for initial physiotherapy assessments and any follow-up physiotherapy sessions for missed appointments that have not been rescheduled in advance.

What kind of clothing should I wear to my appointment?

We recommend wearing loose and athletic clothing that allows easy movement and access to the area being treated. For example, if you're coming in for treatment on your knee or shoulder, wearing comfortable clothing that provides easy access to those areas will ensure the session goes smoothly.

 

I got a referral to see a specialist but haven’t heard anything. What should I do?

It’s common for the process to take a few weeks, as referrals may require time to be processed. If you haven’t heard from us after an extended period, feel free to call our clinic, and we will be happy to check on the status and guide you accordingly.

Pedorthics involves the assessment, design, and fitting of custom footwear and orthotics to manage or prevent conditions related to the feet, ankles, and lower limbs. Pedorthists help individuals with conditions such as flat feet, plantar fasciitis, and other biomechanical issues, providing custom solutions to enhance comfort, mobility, and function.
